I make use of the grid feature on a regular basis. It is very useful for lining up elements, making mats & frames to a specific size, planning a layout etc., etc.
The view the preferences Menu (and specifically Grid Preferences)
Press > Edit > Preferences > Grid
Or use the shortcut for Preferences – Ctrl + K
Click on the down arrow as shown below
Click on Grid as shown below
Now you can set up any size grid you require. The example shown below will set up one inch x one inch squares on your page.
Press OK to set
NOTE: To hide/toggle between grid (and rulers)
Press > View > Grid
