The use of shadows in digital scrapping is crucial for creating a 2 or even 3 dimensional illusion. The correct use of shadows will make you papers and elements “pop” off the page and make your whole layout far more interesting and pleasing to the eye.

In this series of tutorials you will learn several different methods to easily create various “custom shadows”. The pre-set shadows do not look very realistic and always need adjusting and scrappers new to digital often spoil a wonderfully designed layout with unrealistic drop shadows. In this series you will learn how to

1. (a) - Adjust Pre-set Shadows
1. (b) - Custom Shadows for Photo Mats
2. - Curling a Photo
3. - Transforming Shadows to make objects stand up
4. - Painting Shadows to Fold Paper
5. - Shadows using the Gradient Tool

1. (a) How to use and adjust Pre-set shadows
There are several types of shadows available, in the example below I have
used the “low” drop shadow.
Double click on style icon that appears on the layer

The “Style Settings” dialog box appears on your screen. I always adjust the distance first by moving the slider to the left and then I adjust the size. Depending on your background colour you may also like to adjust the opacity of the shadow. There are no hard and fast rules, so don’t be afraid to play around until you achieve a realistic result that you are happy with. (Note I have not adjusted the size to make viewing easier).

If you are unhappy with the result right click on the style icon and click on “clear layer style”.
